Supported housing work is so much more than just a job

Francesca is a Supported Housing Adviser here at Your Homes Newcastle and her passion for her role in the Assisted Living team is clear to see.

She talks enthusiastically about the impressive range of affordable rented housing options for older people in Newcastle which, Francesca says, “have been designed with comfort and security in mind” as we ask her to tell us a bit more about her role.

What does a Supported Housing Adviser do?

Deciding to move out of a home you’ve lived in for years can be a big step. I help customers who are planning a move to Assisted Living to make things as stress free as possible.

What sort of help can you provide?

We know the online application process can be a bit daunting so I can take away some of those worries by helping you to set up your online application and letting you know how it’s progressing.  By working closely with the council and other professionals I help make the process smooth and efficient.

What other support can you offer?

All our customers are different. Some know exactly what they want while others need help to work out the best option for them. Some customers have lots of questions while others just want an occasional update on their application but it’s always important that they know who they can speak to if they need help. 

What do you like about your job?

The best part of my day is always going to visit customers and being able to offer them some support and reassurance so they can feel confident about moving to Assisted Living.

How has COVID changed things?

The pandemic was an unsettling time for a lot of people, especially those who are a bit older or who have underlying health conditions. Customer wellbeing is our priority and we’ve taking extra measures to help them feel safe. 

For example I take regular COVID tests, especially before visiting someone at home, and we’ve extended our cleaning programme to make sure our Assisted Living schemes are as safe as possible.

What do customers think of Assisted Living?

Customers are always telling me how much they love Assisted Living and I will never get tired of hearing just how much of a difference it has made to their lives.
